Alien 3

Engineering Training Option

Skillstart

The Skillstart engineering training vocational course offers an opportunity for a practical, hands-on approach to education. Through the manufacture of a series of carefully designed projects, candidates can gain a level 1 (equivalent to 5 GCSEs up to grade D) or Level 2 (5 GCSEs grade C and above) National Vocational Qualification. Training can include Bench fitting, Sheet metalwork, Electrical installation, Engineering assembly, Welding and Cutting.
These qualifications and experience, recognised by industry, are a potential stepping stone to employment and a career in may technological fields, which could include Electro/mechanical, Construction, Marine, Agricultural and Motor vehicle engineering as well as the Medical Industry.

Depending on the subjects chosen, learners will gain specialist skills in a minimum of two of the following options:

Fitting: You will learn to use hand tools and marking out tools to manufacture components to fine tolerances.

Welding: You will learn to use a combination of MIG, Manual Metal Arc, TIG and Oxy/gas welding techniques. Enabling you to carry out welding of various shapes and material thickness in almost all positions.

Sheet metalwork: You will learn all of the skills necessary to produce simple and complex shapes in thin sheet.

Machining: (Up to Level 1) As well as the use of precision measuring equipment, you will produce a wide variety of projects designed to enable you to become competent to tackle most turning problems.

Wiring Electrical circuits: You will gain the competence required to wire up simple electrical circuits such as lighting, power, and control circuits that comply with appropriate regulations.

Cutting with oxy-gas: Thermal cutting of mild steel sections by hand. Project work enabling you to cut internal and external shapes accurately.

Assembling Mechanical Components: (Up to Level 1)You will learn to correctly position and secure components using various mechanical fastening devices, tools and techniques. You will be able to carry out visual and functional checks to confirm that the finished assembly meets the required standard.
